Payment QR code for donations: how to create one

07 June 2026 · 4 min read read

A payment QR code for donations turns the intent to give into action on the spot: someone scans the code with their banking app, enters (or confirms) the amount and donates in seconds. It is perfect for NGOs, churches, creators, charity events and any fundraiser. Here is how to create it correctly.

Why a QR code for donations

  • Instant giving — nobody mistypes the IBAN or amount;
  • Works anywhere — on a poster, a screen, a donation box, social media or a web page;
  • No processing fees — the money arrives directly, via SEPA transfer;
  • Higher conversion — the easier it is to give, the more people give.

Free amount or fixed amounts?

You have two approaches, depending on the campaign:

  • Free amount — leave the amount field empty when generating the code. The donor enters whatever they wish when scanning. Ideal for general donations.
  • Fixed (preset) amounts — generate several codes, each with an amount (for example 20, 50, 100 EUR), and display them side by side. The donor quickly picks a suggested amount.

Important: SEPA codes are for transfers in euro. Keep that in mind when you set suggested amounts.

How to create it, step by step

  1. Open the SEPA payment QR code generator;
  2. Fill in the beneficiary name (your organisation) and the IBAN where you want to receive donations;
  3. Leave the amount empty (free donation) or set a suggested amount;
  4. Under details, write a short text, for example "Donation" or the campaign name;
  5. Download the PNG image and use it wherever you need.

Where to put it and best practices

  • Add a clear caption next to the code: "Scan to donate";
  • On printed materials, keep the code at least 2.5–3 cm, with good contrast and a white margin around it;
  • On social media or your website, pair it with the campaign's purpose and a target, to build trust;
  • Test the code by scanning it yourself before publishing.

Transparency = more donations

People give more easily when they know where the money goes. Clearly show who you are, what you are raising funds for and, if possible, the campaign's progress. Combined with the ease of a QR code, you have the recipe for an effective fundraiser.
