What is a dynamic QR code (and how it differs from a static one)
08 June 2026 · 5 min read read
A dynamic QR code is a QR code whose destination you can change at any time, without reprinting the code. Instead of encoding a long link directly, it encodes a short, stable link (like https://getqr.ro/d/abc123) that you control. When someone scans it, they are instantly redirected to the destination you set — and you can change that destination from your account whenever you want.
Dynamic QR code vs. static QR code
A static QR code has the destination "frozen" inside it: if you want a different link, you have to generate and reprint a new code. A dynamic QR code always looks the same — on screen and on paper — but you can "redirect" it to any link, anytime. And because every scan passes through getQR, you can count scans and see analytics. We cover the full comparison in dynamic vs. static QR code.
Why use a dynamic code
- Change the destination without reprinting: you printed the code on a poster, packaging, business card or menu — and you can change where it points without printing anything again.
- Scan analytics: see how many scans you get, when, from which device and from which country. More in QR code scan statistics.
- Fix mistakes: wrong link on 5,000 flyers? Fix it in one click, without binning the print run.
- Campaigns and seasonality: the same code points to a summer offer now and a winter one later.
In short: a dynamic code = a stable short link on paper + the freedom to change the destination and measure results. The printed code never changes.
How to create a dynamic QR code with getQR
- Create a free account and go to the Dynamic QR section.
- Add the destination (a link), a name and, optionally, a logo in the middle and brand colors.
- getQR generates the code with a short
/d/...link. Download it and use it anywhere. - Whenever you like, change the destination from your account — the printed code stays valid.
Code types and payments
getQR also generates static codes (link, text, vCard, WiFi, location) and SEPA payment QR codes. If you want to get paid by scan, see the SEPA payment QR code generator. For everything a code that "moves" can do, open the dynamic QR code generator and see how it fits your case in dynamic QR codes for business.
